Steel Service has recently completed work on two hospitals: Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana, Texas, and Permian Basin Behavioral Health Center in Midland, Texas.
The framing of the buildings for Wadley Regional Medical Center consisted of 3,026 tons of structural steel across a 55 acre project site. The finished construction consists of a 254,000-square-foot hospital and a 143,000-square-foot Medical Office building.
“A new hospital in the fastest-growing part of Texarkana will further solidify Wadley Regional Medical Center’s legacy of providing high-quality care to our neighbors,” said Tom Gilbert, President of Wadley Regional Medical Center and Wadley Regional Medical Center at Hope. “Since 1959, Wadley has been proudly serving the community where we live and work, and this state-of-the-art facility will ensure that tradition carries on for generations to come.”

The Permian Basin Behavioral Health Center is a 200-million-dollar project being built on 54 acres next to the University of Texas Permian Basin’s Midland campus. Once completed, the facility will be able to house 200 patients, helping to meet West Texas’s growing need for mental health facilities.
Both of these projects were part of a frequent partnership with Robins & Morton, a general construction company in Birmingham, Alabama. The two companies collaborated extensively during the proposal and planning phases of these projects, and now that Steel Service has completed topping out the steel framing of the buildings, Robins & Morton is working on the final buildout. Both of these hospitals are expected to open in late 2025.
Hospital Construction Has Been a Specialty Since the Beginning
Hospital construction ever since 1979 when they contracted with McInnis Brothers Inc to build an addition to the L S Huckabay hospital in Coushatta, LA. They’ve since built more than 150 hospitals and supporting facilities, refining the process over decades and improving with each build.
“Hospital projects, by nature, are very consistent with the type of beam and column fabrication work we needed to stay competitive and grow our business in the early years,” said Steel Service. “Even though we have grown over the years and the work we do is often heavier and more complicated than some of those early projects, the goal remains the same: efficiently and safely processing every project to the highest standard for our clients regardless of where we are delivering the project and who the customer may be.”

Much of the growth we have experienced in our 50+ year history can be attributed to the faith and confidence those contractors have placed in Steel Service.”
